Conductors And Insulators

There are two main types of substances with respect to electrical conduction properties:

  • 1.       Conductors

Substances which allow flow of electrical current through them.

a.       eg  Aluminium, iron, copper, etc all metals

b.      Graphite (a carbon ) is a non-metallic substance that conducts electricity

c.       Conductors are used for their electrical and thermal properties. Eg copper is used in wires, aluminium is used to make utensils, etc

  • 2.       Insulators

Substances which do not allow flow of electrical current through them

a.       eg  all non-metallic substances like wood, plastic, cement, etc

b.      Conductors are used for their electrical and thermal inhibition properties. Eg Plastic is used to make electrical switches, utensils handle bars, etc
